Shipping Container Windows

Windows are a functional addition to shipping containers, which can be used for workshops, studios, living spaces, offices, and other applications. Installing shipping container windows transforms containers into versatile and functional spaces with health benefits and improved aesthetics.

Shipping Container Window Types

We typically use 3’x3′ dual-pane vinyl sliding windows, but any size or type can be installed. As long as there is room for the window, almost any size and shape can be used.

Other shipping container window types and sizes that we install:

Fixed Windows

  • Non-operable windows that do not open. They are often used to allow natural light while maintaining security.
  • Benefits: Provide ample natural light, energy-efficient, and secure.

Sliding Windows

  • Windows that open by sliding horizontally. They are easy to operate and save space as they do not protrude outward or inward.
  • Benefits: Space-saving, good ventilation control, easy to clean.

Casement Windows

  • Hinged windows that open outward like doors typically operated with a crank.
  • Benefits: Excellent ventilation, tight seal when closed, good for directing breezes into the container.

Awning Windows

  • They are hinged at the top and open outward from the bottom. They are often placed higher on walls for privacy and security.
  • Benefits: They can be left open during rain, have good ventilation, and are secure.

Hopper Windows

  • Hinged at the bottom and open inward from the top. Typically used for ventilation in basements, it can be adapted for containers.
  • Benefits: Compact, good for ventilation, often used in smaller spaces.

Tilt and Turn Windows

  • Dual-function windows that can tilt inwards at the top for ventilation or swing inwards like a casement window.
  • Benefits: Versatile, secure, and easy to clean from the inside.

Bay Windows

  • Multi-panel windows that extend outward from the container, creating a small ledge or nook inside.
  • Benefits: Adds architectural interest, provides additional interior space, and allow for more light.

Picture Windows

  • Large, fixed windows that do not open. They are used to maximize views and natural light.
  • Benefits: Unobstructed views, allows a lot of natural light, energy-efficient.

Skylights

  • These windows are installed on the container’s roof and are often fixed but can be operable.
  • Benefits: Adds natural light from above, can provide ventilation if operable, and enhances interior brightness.

Security Windows

For added security, bars or corrugated steel shutters can be installed to prevent potential break-ins. Additionally, steel shutters or vandalism guards prevent windows from being broken from the outside.

Benefits of Adding Shipping Container Windows

Natural Light and Aesthetics

  • Increased Visibility: Windows allow natural light to enter the container, reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day. This is particularly beneficial for workspaces, living areas, or retail applications.
  • Enhanced Ambiance: Natural light creates a more pleasant and welcoming environment, improving the overall ambiance and making the space feel less confined.
  • Modern Look: Adding windows can significantly enhance the exterior and interior appearance of a storage container, giving it a more polished and modern look. This is especially important if the container is used as an office, home, or commercial space.
  • Customization: Windows are a great way to customize containers by enabling owners to create a unique and personalized space that suits specific needs and tastes.

Ventilation

  • Improved Airflow: Windows that can be opened facilitate better air circulation, which is crucial for maintaining a comfortable indoor environment. Proper ventilation helps reduce humidity, odors, and the buildup of potentially harmful substances.
  • Temperature Regulation: By allowing fresh air to flow through, windows help regulate the temperature inside the container, reducing the reliance on HVAC systems and potentially lowering energy costs.

Functionality

  • Multifunctional Spaces: Storage containers with windows can be repurposed for various uses, including offices, studios, workshops, or even living spaces. This versatility increases the container’s utility and value.
  • Enhanced Productivity: Natural light and proper ventilation can improve productivity and well-being in workspaces, making the environment more conducive to focused and efficient work.

Safety and Security

  • Observation: Windows allow for easy observation of the surroundings without stepping outside. This enhances security and safety, particularly in remote or isolated locations.
  • Escape Routes: In emergencies, windows can provide alternative escape routes, improving overall safety.

Energy Efficiency

  • Daylight Utilization: Utilizing natural light during the day can reduce the need for electric lighting, leading to energy savings and a smaller carbon footprint.
  • Passive Solar Heating: Properly positioned windows take advantage of passive solar heating, which warms the container naturally during colder months and reduces heating costs.
